Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are utilized for energy, both instant and sustained. When insufficient carbohydrates are taken in, the body must utilize proteins for energy even to the point of catabolizing muscle tissue for energy. The principle functions of carbohydrates are to:

Serve as the primary energy source for working muscles.
Ensure that the brain and nervous system function properly.
Help the body use fat more efficiently.

Digestive enzymes in the small intestines break down the carbohydrates into glucose. The glucose can be immediately utilized by the body or stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver. The muscles can store about 20 minutes of glycogen for energy. The bloodstream can hold about an hour of glucose for energy.

If glucose levels are maximized and all glycogen storage locations are full then the excess glucose is converted to fat by the liver and stored in adipose tissue or fat cells. There is really no limit to the amount of fat that a body can store. According to studies at the University of Massachusetts, carbohydrates are generally converted to fat at the rate of 75% where 25% of the carbohydrates are used in the conversion process.

Chitosan

Chitosan Upon oral ingestion, chitosan binds to the intestinal lining, where it tightly binds dietary fats and lipids before they are absorbed in the body. As a result, the dietary fat is prevented from entering into thebloodstream. When dietary fat is bound to the chitosan fiber, it becomes a large mass, which cannot be absorbed in the body.

Chitosan fibers differ in their structure from other fibers in that chitosan possesses a net positive charge. This positive charge attracts negative charges on the fats, lipids and bile acids. Since chitosan fiber is not metabolized, it is cleared from the body along with the fat in the fecal material.

Published reports have shown that chitosan works in concert with vitamin C.It has been suggested that the action of chitosan may be enhanced by as small an amount of vitamin C as 10 mg. Used alone, ingestion of 500 mg chitosan before a meal rich in fat helps reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol.

The bad cholesterol is bound to bile acids secreted by the liver into the intestine, where its re-absorption is prevented by chitosan fibers. This dietary fiber is an indispensable adjunct to a balanced weight management program. Fibers also play an important role in cleansing the gastrointestinal tract, which stimulates the digestive processes and promotes intestinal health.

Creatine

Creatine is an essential, natural substance required for energy metabolism, muscular movement and human existence. Creatine is as essential to life as protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Creatine deficiencies have been associated with certain physical muscular disorders that can be fatal in humans and animals.

It can be synthesized glycine, arginine, and methionine. In humans, the enzymes involved in the synthesis of creatine are located in the liver, pancreas and kidneys. Creatine can be produced in any of these organs and then transported into the muscle via the bloodstream.

Approximately 95% of the total creatine pool is stored in skeletal muscle tissue. The remaining 5% can be found in the heart, brain and testes. It is estimated that a 70 kg (154 lbs.) male will have a total creatine pool of approximately 140 grams in his body. The total creatine pool in humans refers to the combined amount of creatine in its free form and phosphocreatine form.

In skeletal muscle tissue, phosphocreatine accounts for two-thirds of the total creatine pool, with free form creatine making up the balance. In the absence of exogenous (from the diet) creatine, the rate of creatine excreted in the form of creatinine has been estimated to be around 1.6% per day in humans.

Thus, with a bodyweight of 70kg (154 lbs.) and a total creatine pool of 140 grams, a human will lose approximately 2 grams of creatine per day from normal everyday activity. This turnover of creatine will increase with greater physical activity and must be replaced by the diet or the bodies own natural production.

Dietary creatine is found mostly in meat, fish and other animal products. Plants contain only trace amounts. The average daily diet of meats and vegetables contains an estimated creatine level of 1 gram. As only some of the daily requirement of creatine can be attained from diet, the body must synthesize the rest.

Food Type Creatine Content (g/kg)
Shrimp trace
Cod 3
Herring 6.5-10
Salmon 4.5
Tuna 4
Beef 4.5
Pork 5
Milk 0.1
Cranberries 0.02
